Description
This pale blue and white boulder opal has a wee flash of pink – accentuated by the cleverly-sculpted sterling silver wire wrap – but in certain light (sunlight, particularly), it can flash bright green.
It’s a strikingly handsome piece, the opal itself is about 25mm high and 15mm wide. The whole pendant is approximately 51mm high and, including the sweep of wire at the top, 23mm wide.
This opal has been cut and polished by hand to show off the “flash” to best advantage, very much a labour of love.
It is at its best as it has been photographed – bathed in light – so don’t hesitate to wear it outside.
Being boulder opal, it does have its dark, “dry” patches, but they only serve to accentuate the shine on the rest of it.
The chain on which the pendant was photographed is not included.
The technique of wire-wrapping is not new – it dates back to the early Egyptians. Wire-wrapping uses no solder or glues, the wire ends being neatly hidden away wherever possible. Because it is handmade with few tools and no machines, it is a one-off. Although there may be similar pieces, it is virtually impossible for me to repeat a pattern exactly because of the very nature of wire-wrapping.
It is also, by definition, imperfect but that’s part of the beauty.
When looking at the photos, be sure to also refer to the description for the colour, because computer monitors differ so much and can do strange things to colours.
