Description
A stunning pendant made from an irregular shaped piece of boulder opal – cut from the stone and polished by hand – held in a beautifully-balanced sterling silver wire sculpted setting.
The stone with a lot of opal colour showing, is about 38mm high and 30mm wide. There are green flashes visible, especially in the sunlight, the top half of the stone having a pale blue background with an orange “tongue” in the centre. The bottom half is a mixture of bright green and blue opal and boulder rock, a fantastic contrast. There are some marks on the boulder rock, but nothing to detract from the beauty of the piece.
It looks at its best as it is photographed – bathed in light – so don’t hesitate to wear it outside.
Being boulder opal, it does have its dark, “dry” patches, but they only serve to accentuate the shine on the rest of it.
The whole pendant is about 62mm high and 34mm wide.
The chain on which the pendant was photographed is not included.
The technique of wire-wrapping is not new – it dates back to the early Egyptians. Wire-wrapping uses no solder or glues, the wire ends being neatly hidden away wherever possible. Because it is handmade with few tools and no machines, it is a one-off. Although there may be similar pieces, it is virtually impossible for me to repeat a pattern exactly because of the very nature of wire-wrapping.
It is also, by definition, imperfect but that’s part of the beauty.
When looking at the photos, be sure to also refer to the description for the colour, because computer monitors differ so much and can do strange things to colours.
